Chateau de Jonvilliers

French Bed and Breakfast

www.chateaudejonvilliers.com

The chateau is a family-run bed and breakfast that offers five rooms on its top floor with wonderful views of the surrounding country. Each of the rooms are named after local villages, e.g., the Gallardon Room which is the one we occupied. A delightful couple, Richard and Virginie Thompson and their two young sons, Joseph and Victor, run the chateau. Richard is from the United States and Virginie is from France, so both English and French were spoken. This bilingual setting was a great benefit to those of us that are not fluent in French. The chateau is steep in family history as related to us by Virginie, who also speaks perfect English. We dined several nights with the Thompsons and enjoyed what we would call in the United States, a sampling of Virginie's down-home cooking, French-style. We found the location very convenient to visit Gallardon, Rambouillet, Chartres and Orleans and many other surrounding French cities.

An unexpected surprise was the two pheasants that guarded the entrance to the Chateau. Every morning they would stand in the driveway as we drove out as if to say you can't leave us. They would run along the side of our car, darting back and forth trying very hard to persuade us to go back, and it made for a very interesting drive leaving the chateau.
